Beaded Flip Flops - What You'll Need
Sandals can get expensive. Dressing up a pair of cheap flip flops will not only save you money, but will give you a completely original look. Add some beads to your flip-flops with these easy step-by-step instructions for DIY fashion.
- What You'll Need:
- A pair of plain flip-flops
- Pony beads- These are small plastic beads that are commonly used for simple craft projects and beading hair.
- Scissors
- Fishing line- more durable than thread
- Glue Gun
- Measuring tape
Once you have your supplies, you can get started.
Measure the Fishing Line
Measure your fishing line
Measure both sides of the thong on the flip flop and add about fifteen inches to the measurement. Cut a length of fishing line according to your measurement.
Move on to attach the fishing line to the thong.
Glue the Line to the Flip-Flop
Wrap the line around, each time adding a bead.
Poke an 1/8" to a 1/4" of the fishing line into the crack where the plastic thong is attached to the bottom of the flip-flop. The more fishing line you poke in, the more secure your beads will be.
Squeeze a small dab of hot glue into the hole. Let the glue dry, and then inspect how well it holds by giving the fishing line a soft tug. If it comes loose, try again, this time pushing more fishing line in.
When your fishing line is glued, begin to thread the beads.
Thread the Beads
Wrap the fishing line around the thong, slipping a bead onto the line with each wrap. Once you’ve twisted all the way around the thong, glue the other end of the fishing line onto the thong like you did in the previous step.
When you finish your first flip-flop, complete steps two through four on your other flip-flop.
Here are some tips for success.
Tips
Try beads that will match your flip-flop.
- To keep the beads from slipping around, each time you add a bead you can put a dab of glue on bottom of the bead to secure it to the thong.
- Try using bead colors that will go good with the color of your thong. Even an ugly black thong can be renewed with some transparent blue and white beads.
- The great thing about pony beads is that they come in so many different colors, as well as transparent, glow-in-the-dark, and even glittery beads. Explore your options when you visit the craft store.
- Try another project with pony beads, beaded fringe pants.
